Jim is the CEO and co-founder of a new software company and a serial CEO and entrepreneur who has built and run half a dozen successful companies. He specializes in identifying and mentoring high-potential founders and CEOs to help them become world-class leaders. He takes a partnership approach to showing founders how to design and run hyper-growth businesses that stand the test of time. This includes learning how and when to take risks, as well as how to relentlessly build, motivate and upgrade their teams and tie their missions to aggressive, actionable plans that get results. 

In addition to his role as a CEO and a venture partner at Shasta, Jim is Chairman and co-founder of Turn, and Chairman of Extole and Sojern. His current investments include Turn, Extole, Needle and a leading education company.

Jim has served on the boards of many private and public companies including SideStep, Inc., where he was Chairman, and Petco, where he was an early investor. Previously he was CEO and co-founder of Turn and before that President of Overture Search, a division of Overture Services, Inc. Jim joined Overture after its acquisition of AltaVista Company, where he was president and CEO. In this role, he led the company's successful turnaround and sale to Overture. Prior to AltaVista, Jim was President of Ancestry.com (previously named MyFamily) and CEO of Accolade.

Jim earned a BA from Stanford University, a J.D. from Stanford Law School and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

When he is not spending time with entrepreneurs, Jim enjoys getting out and seeing the world, whether traveling to far-flung locales or cycling in and around the San Francisco Bay Area.
